During this time of year, I think about how grateful we are to be a part of the mission of St. Francis Community Services, Catholic Legal Assistance Ministry … this is especially true on the days when I am moved to tears by our clients willingness to work with us to do what it takes to overcome impossible situations.
For instance, the future of 14-year old Marcus. When both his mother and father passed away from a drug overdose, he moved in with a family member. Unfortunately, to make matters worse, the family member started abusing him. With nowhere else to turn, Marcus confided in his Army Veteran Uncle James.
James was desperate to save his nephew – his only connection left to his sister. He called our legal aid office to see if he could obtain guardianship over Marcus – and his case entered our Veteran Advocacy Program. Our team represented James and successfully obtained legal guardianship. “Thank you for listening to me,” said Uncle James. “You helped keep my nephew safe!”
This is only one story among the hundreds of clients we represent each year in areas such as family law, immigration, municipal matters, and guardianships.
I know you care about the clients we serve. You understand that attorneys are not guaranteed in civil matters like James’, despite consequences of cases that alter lives for generations. Would you consider a gift of $120 to help support uncles like James – to pave the pathway for a safer, more stable life for others? https://sfcsstl.org/support-legal-aid
Today, Marcus is in child counseling and succeeding academically as an honor roll student at his new high school – he even joined the school football program! I hope you will join me in our ongoing quest to create a world where every human is valued. Together, we will continue to walk with our most vulnerable neighbors creating opportunities, building resiliency, and advocating for justice.
With our deepest thanks,
Amy Hirsch Diemer, Director of Legal Services
P.S. Every $948 gift we receive could help provide legal assistance to 5 mothers and their children who are victims of abuse in the Family Law Project. Every gift of $1,448 could provide intensive legal intervention for 10 veterans. EVERY gift helps us sow seeds of hope!
P.S.S. If you want to double your impact – ask about our available tax credits, where every $1,000 or more could help you receive 50% (even $70) back in Missouri Tax Credits. Or visit www.sfcsstl.org/tax-credits for more information.
